Does ValAddThis function like AddThis in regards to the button selected being automatically added to EVERY article unless it contains {addthis off} or {valaddthis off}?

I have a web site, and I also have multple clients with sites where there are just far too many articles to edit to add this text string to turn off the "Share" button. What we need is something just like this, but where we specify with a {valaddthis} or {valaddthis on} into only those articles where we want the button displayed.

Ideally, including {valaddthis on} after the --Read-More--- line would only have it appear on the display of the full article and would skip displaying it on any Blog listing.

Thoughts? Willing to make this simple update?

Thanks!!!

Hi there. First of all, I have to point out that ValAddThis is a Joomla module and not a plugin. That means, you can publish it to any available module position, or inside the content of an article (like any other module) by creating a user-defined module position (valandis.de/.../...).

For now I'm not thinking of releasing a plugin version of the module, so you are only able to use it the way I mentioned before.

Thanks for this info. I'm sure your tip about including a module into an article will be very helpful.

I'm also thinking that this is a way that ValAddThis can be useful -- First, I add a new uniquely defined position in my template which will only be enabled for the FrontPage. Then I put the plugin into those articles where I want the button to show.

Will this work?

Thanks a ton!!!

Yes this will work, but you have to know that the module is the same, only it is copied into multiple articles. This means, in a Category Blog layout for example, the module won't be able to determine the URL of the article where is displayed. The URL that will be passed to the AddThis script (thus to the bookmarking services) will be the one of the Category page, as well as the description.

The best way to pass the URL of every specific article would be to use a Joomla plugin that is made to do that; ValAddThis it's not appropriate for multiple instances such as in a Category Blog layout.

Hi,

I have 2 questions...

I have just installed this mod (successfully) and it appears to work without the AddThis.com code snippet. So, my question is:

Do I need to insert the AddThis.com code snippet as instructed on their site or is that redundant (unecessary) when I use this mod?

My next question is:

Where is the Email icon in the dropdown? I can't find it anywhere (in your dropdown it's in first position). Everything elese seems to be there.

Regards and thanks,

Sergio

Hi Sergio,

1. No there's no need for you to insert the AddThis code snippet, because the module ValAddThis does this for you; it calls the AddThis script.
2. If you don't have an account ID at AddThis.com you will not be able to use the email function, as far as I know. Go to their website, create an account, then put in the module's parameters the AddThis ID.

Best regards

I would like to have this load two instances inline one for bookmarks and one for email pop--up. These both seem to be working but are on two lines not inline. I've tried using module class suffix to force this to display inline but it isn't working. Is there another location to adjust this.

Ofcourse it is possible to position the buttons however you want, by using the appropriate CSS styles; and I can confirm that it worked just fine for me after applying a "display: inline" CSS style using the module's CSS class suffix. Maybe the style you're trying to apply there is overriden by another style in your template's CSS file.

Ofcourse you can display the module in any available module position, and also in any article description, or even category description by using the "loadposition" built-in Joomla plugin (valandis.de/.../...).

AddThis script automatically reads the URL of the web-page where it is currently displayed on; that means it will work wherever you place it on!

The site is on a free host and the url is not very good.
Instead I want to put in my other link.

Why don't you just put the AddThis button/toolbox on the other website, where you have Joomla installed? If you want to pass a specific URL to the AddThis script, the module ValAddThis won't help you, because it obtains the URL automatically.

I'd suggest you to visit the AddThis Forum and tell them what you need. They can possibly shed some more light there for you.

I have the joomla installed on a free host with a bad link.
Instead I´ve registerd a nice url wich is redirected to the free host. Thats why I dont want it to use the current url.

I belived that the module read the current url and if you knew the code you could put in another url.

Thanks anyway. I´ll try the Addthis forum

site stopped loading in ie5 "operation aborted".
Placing the script after the module and not at the header solved the problem.

Thank you for the feedback! I didn't know the AddThis script caused such an error in IE5.

Have you experienced errors in other browsers too? It would be nice if you reported them at the AddThis Forum.

I always test my scripts with the latest versions of all popular browsers. Even IE6 is a deprecated browser with many bugs, that noone should use.

Εννοείται ότι ο ΙΕ5 έπρεπε να έχει φύγει εδώ και καιρό, απορώ γιατί υπάρχουν ακόμη άτομα που τον χρησιμοποιούν.

I love this. I have played with quite a few of these bookmark and share apps tonight. I am thinking to use yours. One thing I did not find is how to add the Email option/icon to the list. I put it on one of my test sites at CarneyCorner.com and I would love to have Email be the first icon or up at the top since I believe that will still be the main way users will share the sites I want to put this one.

# Chrysovalantis Mochlas 2010-02-12 11:00
Of course it is possible to have the email option first; just put it first in the services field (module's parameters). If you are going to use the AddThis button, rather than the toolbox you will probably need an account at AddThis.com, in order to be able to display the email icon.

Is there a way to integrate the google analytics component of addthis into this module?

I'm looking for where I enter the "addthis_config = {
data_ga_tracker: pageTracker"

This information found on:
addthis.com/.../...

Hi Chris and thanks for the feedback. This feature is actually a new one and still in public beta, as you can see. I will implement it in the new version of the module, by adding a new parameter.

For now if you want to use it, you have to modify the file "helper.php" of the module; after line 183 insert the following code:
Zitat:
$output .= "data_ga_tracker: pageTracker";

then save the file and you are done. AddThis will work then with Google Analytics wherever you use ValAddThis.

Hi - thank you very much for the prompt response - this is a great addon!

I have modified my helper.php to now look like..
" $output .= "data_use_cookies: false";
}
$output .= "data_ga_tracker: pageTracker";
$output .= "}; \n";

// allow user styling for AddThis div"

that copy begins on line 182 and ends on 187.

Thanks again!

Hi, I've just changed it to look like this:

}
$output .= "}; \n";
$output .= "data_ga_tracker: pageTracker";
$output .= "}; \n";

// allow user styling for AddThis div

Correct?

The modification you did before looked correct, this one seems different than the source file. The commenting system just blocks the word script from the comment.

As I said, everything looks good with the code; this feature of AddThis is still in Beta, so it might not work as you expect.

I'd suggest you to ask the AddThis developers at their Forum for further info, in case you need to alter something in your GA account.

Hi there! It seems that you haven't read the module's documentation so well.. as I already state on this page: valandis.de/.../... If you want to use a custom image, you should only choose between absolute or document-relative links.

Hi there,

I was getting a couple of "Undefined Variable" errors on lines 195 and 198. So I included the following lines to declare the variables:

//insert after line 42
$ui_use_embeddable_services_beta = $params->get('ui_use_embeddable_services_beta');
$data_ga_tracker = $params->get('data_ga_tracker');

hello, I like this module by the way :D

I am currently experimenting with ways to speed up my website, and I am trying to reduce the number of http requests by merging and compressing all css and js files. ValAddThis currently calls for 2 files from the outside (addthis_widget.js and widget37.css). Is there any way to call those two files from my own domain so that I can merge and compress them with my other js/css files?

Regards and Thank you :-)

Hi deni and thanks for the kind words.

Because AddThis constantly change their scripts, it is rather a bad idea to host these files on your server; if you did so, you would need to update them as often as possible in order to keep up with AddThis.

Try this: askapache.com/.../...
I use it for google analytics and will use it for addthis aswell.
