Documentation of the plugin ValAddThis. This plugin is compatible with Joomla! versions 1.5, 1.6, 1.7 and 2.5+ and works with the Bookmarking service script of AddThis.com. Detailed documentation about the installation, configuration, support and download.

The content plugin ValAddThis is compatible with both Joomla! versions 1.5, 1.6, 1.7 as well as 2.5+, and it uses the Bookmarking services of AddThis.com. For a complete list of the AddThis features take a look at this page. ValAddThis allows the easy configuration as well the display of the AddThis Button or AddThis Toolbox, in any Joomla article, category, section or frontpage, with or without using plugin tags. ValAddThis will automatically read the article URL, its title and the description, and it will pass them to the AddThis script for you. It produces valid markup for XHTML as well as for CSS 2.1. ValAddThis is free software, which has been released under the GNU/GPL v2.0 license.

This version of the plugin supports the latest AddThis Menu Client API 2.0, in combination with the old API 1.0 (which is still used to display an RSS-Feed button). With ValAddThis you're also able to display the new AddThis Toolbox as well as several other special buttons (such as: LinkedIn and Stumbleupon counters), which aren't supported officially by AddThis yet; for more details on the various configuration options read on. New features in this latest version of ValAddThis plugin will be marked with this icon: New feature of ValAddThis

All the documentation screenshots were taken in Joomla! 1.5, but they won't look much different in newer versions of Joomla!

1. Installation

If you already have an older version of the plugin installed, you don't need to uninstall it as it will update itself. Here are the installation steps:

  • Go to your Joomla administration backend and on the menu Extensions and click on "Install/Uninstall" (after J1.6 is "Extension Manager").
    Screenshot: Extension installation #1
  • Upload the file contained here by clicking on "Browse..." and selecting the zipped file.
    Screenshot: Extension installation #2
  • Click on "Upload file & Install".
    Screenshot: Extension installation #3

Now the content plugin ValAddThis is installed and you can begin using it.

Hi,

the Valaddthis plugin works fine on my Joomla 2.5 website. Now I am updating to Joomla 3. Are you planning to make the Valaddthis plugin also available for Joomla 3?

Best regards,
Stefan

Using ValAddThis plugin with joomla 2.5.11.
The plugin enables the share buttons to appear in any article created. However, when choosing a category from the menu on the website, the share buttons do not appear in the article. They do appear in that article when accessing it through its unique URL address. For example, compare atid-edi.com/.../fortnightly and atid-edi.com/.../...

Why is this? Can we have the share buttons appear in all cases?

Hello,
Does it work with Joomla! 3.0? It says 2.5+, but does it mean that 3.0 as well or just the vaious 2.5 versions?
I tried to install and it says there is a problem with the xml file...
Thank you.

Hi,

I like to know how I can place Joomla variables in the module toolbox to share the article title and the metadesc.

Hope you can help me.

Regards,

Ed

//-----get article's URL, title, description and ID
$articleURL = urldecode($this->getURL($this->_article));
$articleTitle = $this->_article->title;
$articleDesc = $this->_article->metadesc;
$articleID = $this->_article->id;

Quoting Chrysovalantis Mochlas:
This is a Joomla issue, which is also explained here: code.google.com/.../.... Only way to fix it now is to rollback to J2.5.9.

Could I edit Joomla code to make it work then? It shouldn't mess up with other Joomla features, for this is a bug and not new joomla feature, am I right?

As you probably understood the sharing option is very important for my website.

Thanks in advance
