2. Configuration

The configuration page of the plugin supports currently 3 languages; Greek, English and German. If you want to write a translation for your language, do the following:

  • Open the zipped file you downloaded from Google Code and extract the text language file plg_content_valaddthis\language\en-GB.plg_content_valaddthis.ini.
  • Open this file with your favourite text editor (eg. Notepad++).
  • In the text file can see many variables being defined as: VARIABLE_NAME=some text. Replace the text you see after the equal sign (=) with the translated text into your language.
  • Save the file in UTF-8 format (just overwrite the file eg. by clicking on "Save" from the File menu in Notepad).
  • Send the translated language file to me. You can contact me at this address: valandis[at]valandis.de.

2.1. Edit Plugin

  • Go to the menu "Extensions" and click on "Plugin Manager".
    Screenshot: Plugin manager #1
  • Now look for the plugin name "plg_content_valaddthis" (after J1.6 is "Content - ValAddThis") and click on it, in order to edit it.
    Screenshot: Plugin manager #2
Now you are on the plugin's configuration screen. On the right hand side you can see all the available plugin parameters.

2.2. General Parameters

The first parameters you may alter are the general ones:
plugin01new

  1. You can enter a CSS class to be applied to the plugin, for individual styling. (default: empty)
  2. In order to use the free Analytics service of AddThis.com you have to create an account there and put your account's ID in the plugin field "AddThis ID"; having an account at AddThis gives you access to their free Analytics service. You should also enter your account ID, in case you use an AddThis Button and want to include the "email" service in the AddThis menus; otherwise the email icon won't appear in the AddThis menu. It seems that this is not true if you use an AddThis toolbox instead. (default: empty)
  3. If you are installing the plugin on a secure Web-Server (https), choose "Yes". (default: "No")
  4. Now here you may choose the type of AddThis that will be displayed inside Joomla's articles. Some of the plugin's parameters below are valid only for the Button or for the Toolbox. (default: "Button")
  5. Here you may choose the type of AddThis that will be displayed inside Joomla's categories. (default: "Button")
  6. Here you may choose the type of AddThis that will be displayed inside Joomla's sections (valid only for Joomla! 1.5). (default: "Button")
  7. Here you may choose the type of AddThis that will be displayed on the frontpage (J1.5) or featured articles layout view (after J1.6). (default: "Button")
  8. Choose the position of the plugin relative to the article content; it can be placed on the top, at the bottom or both on the top and at the bottom of articles. (default: "Top")
  9. Choose "Yes" in order to enable the plugin inside Joomla categories. (default: "Yes")
  10. Choose "Yes" in order to enable the plugin inside Joomla sections (valid only for Joomla! 1.5). (default: "Yes")
  11. Choose "Yes" in order to enable the plugin on the frontpage (J1.5) or featured articles layout view (after J1.6) of your Joomla website. (default: "Yes")
  12. This is a comma-separated list of excluded articles (by using their ID); the plugin won't be displayed in the articles listed here. (default: empty)
  13. This is a comma-separated list of excluded categories (by using their ID); the plugin won't be displayed in the categories listed here. (default: empty)
  14. This is a comma-separated list of excluded sections (by using their ID); the plugin won't be displayed in the sections listed here (valid only for Joomla! 1.5). (default: empty)
  15. Optionally you may enter some HTML code, which is going to be displayed before the AddThis Button/Toolbox. (default: empty)
  16. Optionally you may enter some HTML code, which is going to be displayed after the AddThis Button/Toolbox. (default: empty)

ValAddThis has no control of what Facebook shares. The FB script reads your meta tags automatically. In order to control what is being shared you have to use OpenGraph tags: developers.facebook.com/.../...

ValAddThis is a GREAT plugin, however, a facebook recommend button, places an message on the fb timetime with the wrong text and the wrong image.

It grabs the description metatext from the homepage, instead of the description from the article page.

I also have no control of what image it grabs and shares.

Can this feature be added?

Hi! First of all, great plugin and easy to configure/customize. One question: is there any option for the vote/share buttons to share just the website address rather than the single article? I'm setting up a website and when clicked a share button (example Facebook "I Like"), it applied to the specific articles. Thanks beforehand for any help! :D

Quoting Horus68:
Good extension.
On the plugin screen you need to separate the different Button and Toolbox Parameters options in new lines. Its quite confusing to know what radio button chooses what.
Maybe simpler would be to choose services one by one in the Toolbox.

Data Track Linkback its off but a code its added to the URL shared to facebook (as in /index.php/a-rede-de-bibliotecas#.T516nMf-jso.facebook )

As it regards the options for the various Buttons/Quick Toolbox I haven't found a way to style it; J1.6+ uses a totally different way to display images that were embedded in the XML file. In J1.5 all look just fine. As I already mention in the documentation, use the screenshots found here as a guide.

The code that is appended at the end of the URL being shared is an issue of AddThis and not ValAddThis. This is the case for the services that are displayed by AddThis; most of the times it helps if you enter you personal AddThis ID in the corresponding configuration field.

Καλημέρα,

This plugin is not only great but is highly customizable.
The only problem i face is with twitter counter. It doesn't count +1 after tweeting.

I am using Joomla 1.7.3

Any ideas?

Thanks in advance,

Hi Valandis, thanks again for this great plugin.

I'm having some minor trouble with J2.5! though...
When I use the new built-in introtext/fulltext image options, the social bookmarking icons appear *below* the embedded image.
Maybe it's not even the plugin's fault, I don't know, just thought I'd mention it and hope for a fix.
Those included image options are very useful

The Very Best Social Web Module i have tried.

Easy install, configurable, good working, nice looking, speaks many languages.

I only suggest 1 thing, lets include all icon in 32px size too.

Facebook counter is hidden. If i have an option to the settings to change facebook width that would be a solution.
