Joomla Tip/Tutorial: How to use the free Google Analytics service for my Joomla Website?

The Google offers a free statistics service for your Website(s), which is called Google Analytics. In order to use it, you have to create an account at Google and then sign up for the Google Analytics service. Some of the features of this service are:

  • Free and easy to use for everyone.
  • Offers advanced information about the traffic of your Website.
  • Possibility of user-defined custom reports.
  • Integrated with the Google advertising service AdWords.
  • Tracking of all your online campaigns.
  • Safe. All information is protected from non-authorized people.
  • Integrity and protection of all data.
  • It is part of a larger Google product suite.
  • It offers support and professional services.

1. Sign up for a Google Account

The first thing you should do before you can use the Google Analytics service, is to create an account at Google. Therefore go to the Web page of Google Analytics.

  • On the right side of the page click on "Sign Up Now".
Screenshot: Sign Up for Google Analytics service
  • Then you can see the Web page for a new account creation.
    1. Here enter a valid email address.
    2. Here enter a password for your account (2 times for verification).
    3. Here enter the characters you see above in the "Captcha" picture.
    4. Finally you have to accept the Google terms of use by clicking on "I accept. Create my account.".

  • After you complete the above procedure you will receive an email with information about the activation of your Google account. This email will contain a link on which you have to click, in order to activate your account.
Screenshot: Email with your Google account activation details
  • After clicking the activation link, a browser window will open and you will be notified about the Google account activation.

2. Sign up for Google Analytics

After you have created a Google account, go to the Web page of Google Analytics again to sign up for a Google Analytics account.

  • On the right click on "Access Analytics".
    Screenshot: Access Google Analytics service
  • Now you have to enter your Google account information, such as the email and your password, in order to log in to the Google Analytics service.
Screenshot: Login to Google Analytics service
  • After you log in, you will see a window with the title "Sign Up for Google Analytics". You have to click on "Sign Up" to continue.

  • Now you get to a page with the title "Analytics: New Account Signup", where you have to enter some general information.
    1. The domain name of your Website (e.g. www.mydomain.com) as well as the protocol http or https.
    2. A name for your account (e.g. the name of your Website).
    3. The name of your country or territory.
    4. The time zone.
Last click on "Continue" in order to continue.

  • On the next page again with the title "Analytics: New Account Signup" you have to enter some personal information.
    1. Your last name.
    2. Your first name.
    3. A telephone number.
    4. The country you live in.
Last click on "Continue" in order to continue.
Screenshot: New account of Google Analytics #2
  • On the next page you have to agree with the terms of use, where you click on "Yes" to check it and then on "Create New Account".

  • On the last page Googe shows you the JavaScript code, which you have to copy and paste on every single page of your Website, so that it can track information about the traffic. Since this is extremely hard for novice users, there have been developed some Joomla plugins, which do the "dirty" job for you. These plugins need to know only your tracking ID, which Google embeds in their tracking script.
    1. So take pen and paper and make a note of the tracking ID, which you can find inside the Google script and looks like this UA-xxxxxxx-x, where x is some number.
    2. Then click on "Continue".

Now your signup for Google Analytics is completed. This tutorial however will not get into more details on how to use this service. If you want to learn more about it, take a look at the Documentation and Support page of Google Analytics.

3. Installation of the Google Analytics Bridge 2009 Joomla Plugin

The easiest way to paste the tracking code of Google Analytics on your Joomla web pages, is to install a Joomla plugin. One of the best plugins out there is the Google Analytics Bridge 2009, which you can download from its Website. This plugin is compatible with Joomla 1.5 and you can visit also its page at Joomla Extensions.

  • After you download the Google Analytics Bridge 2009 plugin go to the Joomla administration Backend. On the menu "Extensions" click on "Install/Uninstall".

And for those who don't know, you need to find the index page of your template and install the code there. Normally

Hallo zusammen

Parse error: syntax error, unexpected T_CONST, expecting T_OLD_FUNCTION or T_FUNCTION or T_VAR or '}' in d:\www\www399\joomla\plugins\system\u24gab.php on line 13

Bitte helfen! - Danke!

Hi Phil,
it doesn't take too long for Google to collect the data; usually a couple of days after you apply for the service.
Regards
